"Issues of World War III" Survey

"Should the U.S. increase its aid to the Russian nuclear security program?" Every response favored cutting off financial support for guarding Russia's nuclear weapons, although one answer also wanted to send in American forces to seize the Russian nukes and another advocated destroying them. Only a couple of comments were relevant:

• "Russia is our enemy…"
• "…Bomb their nuclear facilties!…"

Factual Background:
Virtually since the "breakup" of the Soviet Union, the U.S. government has sent millions of dollars per year (hundreds of millions in recent years) to bolster Russian security programs guarding their vast nuclear arsenal. The theory sounds simple: All those nuclear bombs and warheads are a tempting target for theft by terrorists, and we must make sure they are securely guarded.

But upon further thought, a couple of serious problems present themselves. For one thing, who are those unnamed terrorists we're trying to keep from acquiring nukes? Communist propaganda would have us believe Communism is no longer a threat (so we shouldn't try to fight its revolutionary manifestations throughout the world), and that we face instead a dangerous upsurge of Muslim fanaticism that can't be easily defeated. Topping the list of "Muslim extremists" is the ever-changing "Al Qaeda," the most phenomenally shapeless, unstructured, magically powerful terrorist organization in history, complete with no headquarters, no chain of command or clearly identifiable leadership, no particular location or sponsoring regime, no source of weapons or training (apparently they train themselves, or so we're supposed to imagine), no strategy, and not even a flag or symbol of any kind. The Bush Administration can't even decide which groups allegedly belong to "Al Qaeda," and constantly changes the very definition of just what "Al Qaeda" is supposed to be. But then, one can't expect better for a legend that no intelligence expert in previous years took seriously.

In reality, all of the several hundred terrorist groups worldwide belong to a tightly controlled network supervised by the intelligence agencies of the Communist Bloc. The Soviet KGB/FSB plays the lead role in organizing and directing the terror network; North Korea, Vietnam, Algeria, Cuba, and various eastern European nations provide much of the military training; and Iran, Syria, Egypt, Libya, and Afghanistan provide Soviet arms or play host to most of the training centers. The terror network includes the PLO, the IRA, the Basque ETA, the Weather Underground in the U.S., the Tamil Tigers, and hundreds of other guerrilla groups worldwide.

So there's no way for terrorists to get Soviet Russian nukes unless the Soviets provide the nukes themselves. And that's a very real possibility in the future. The only thing holding back the Soviets from arming their terror network with unconventional weapons is the fear of massive retaliation that would make the attempt backfire badly. But funding Soviet "nuclear security" doesn't help the slightest against this threat.

The other question is why the Russians still have those nuclear weapons at all. According to their propaganda, they claim to have collapsed, thus ending the "Cold War" with America and western Europe. So why didn't Russia's "new" rulers get rid of those weapons, or hand them over to America, like Germany and Japan disarmed at the end of World War II?

The first clue was that Boris Yeltsin was himself a long-time apparatchik of the Communist Party. The second clue was his open revelation that Russian nuclear missiles were still pointed at the United States — and maintained fueled and ready to launch, at considerable expense. Yeltsin's successors, Yevgeniy Primakov and Vladimir Putin, are not only long-time Communists but also both headed the KGB secret police prior to assuming full power. And they, too, openly keep their nuclear arsenal in top shape, armed and ready to fire at the U.S. at any time. In fact, Putin is now deploying newer, more expensive, more advanced nuclear missiles (the Topol-M) to deliver nuclear warheads against American targets.

They're not exactly behaving like Germany or Japan in 1945.

What this all means is that Communism never "died" or relinquished the slightest control over Russia or most of eastern Europe. The thousands of concentration camps are still active, the regimes are expanding and mobilizing their military forces, and their aid to the global terror network is sharply accelerating. Various U.S. and British intelligence experts agree that Communism remains in full power in Soviet Russia and its satellites.

So it shouldn't be too surprising that some Congressmen have discovered evidence that Soviet Russia takes the money we provide for "nuclear security" and spends it instead on — yes, you guessed right — expanding their nuclear arsenal in preparation for war! Revelations like that have created serious controversy over the funding of the Russian nuclear program. Several times in recent years, Congress has voted to reduce or eliminate that funding, each time being blocked by presidential veto (both Clinton and Bush fight hard to maintain the Soviet funding).

Relevant Torah Principles:
1) It goes without saying that the Torah forbids treason, i.e., aid to the enemy. But the Noahide commandment to establish justice also demands rapid victory over an enemy that poses a threat. Rather than waiting for an inevitable attack, a nation must strike preemptively and must achieve the most rapid possible victory. A prolonged confrontation or war can only bring disaster and unnecessary loss of human life. These principles are spelled out in more detail in Jewish Law (such as the Shulchan Oruch, the table of Jewish Law), but they all apply under Noahide Law.

2) In such circumstances, war is a mitzvah (a commandment, or good deed). Consequently, a person shows his faith in G-d by enthusiastically going to war and trusting G-d for victory and deliverance; a person who seeks to avoid war, instead praying or carrying out other "spiritual" alternatives, shows a total lack of faith and can expect punishment accordingly — such as being a victim of the war he refused to win.

3) The Torah teaches (in last week's Torah portion, Chukas, Numbers 21) that the Amaleki enemy attacks while in disguise, in order to deflect the counterattack in the wrong direction and render it ineffective. Communism, as the modern, external manifestation of the Amaleki underground, does the same — as, for example, hiding behind "Al Qaeda" myths or nonexistent "Muslim fanatics." In order to defeat this powerful deception, the Torah says Jews must do two things: (a) Identify the true enemy and not be misled as to his identity, and (b) commit before G-d that not just to defeat, but utterly to annihilate, the Amaleki enemy. When gentile nations must defend themselves from Amaleki aggression, these same principles presumably apply.

Analysis:
Obviously we mustn't finance Soviet Russian nuclear buildup, which is exactly what that funding program amounts to. But by the same token, we can't just sit here while they build more nukes and prepare to attack.

That means striking aggressively, like in World War II. The U.S. must show its faith in G-d by launching all-out war, nuclear and conventional, against the Soviet Bloc. We must invade and take out the neo-Communist regimes, liberate millions of innocent civilians being murdered in the concentration camps, and most importantly, destroy or capture those nuclear weapons.

That would put the international terror network out of business, remove any nuclear threat, and stabilize the world and usher in an era of peace.

If we don't do our responsibility now, it will happen soon anyway with the coming of the true Messiah, king of Israel. But that would mean America would first have to receive G-d's punishment and be the victim of war, rather than the victor with G-d's blessing.

Have Some Jewish Leaders Betrayed the Torah?

This week's example:
Rabbi Shlomo Mandel, Dean, Yeshiva & Mesivta of Brooklyn, Brooklyn, NY

A JAHG-USA volunteer showed Rabbi Mandel our PLO-defunding Proclamation last September 29th. He excused himself from signing by saying he doesn't sign such things (presumably meaning proclamations?) — but then bluntly admitted he would sign the Proclamation if other prominent rabbis in Brooklyn would do so.

In other words, the rabbi implicitly acknowledged there was absolutely nothing wrong with the Proclamation itself, insofar as he would theoretically be willing to sign it. He thus also agreed, in effect, that he would be an appropriate leader to endorse the Proclamation. So what was his problem? He didn't want to stand out alone on the issue; he would only participate if everyone, absolutely everyone else, were also doing so. By no means did he want to risk being the slightest bit controversial with anyone.

Since Rabbi Mandel's refusal, we have received the endorsements of several leading rabbis in Flatbush, one of the Brooklyn areas from which he wanted to see others sign; in fact, JAHG-USA's campaign was endorsed by virtually all the directors of the Vaad HaRabonim, the official rabbinical council for Flatbush.

Rabbi Mandel is the head of a major (non-Hasidic) yeshiva in Brooklyn, and he has much potential influence, for better or for worse. It is truly astonishing that, these days, leaders are more afraid to speak out on what they know is right (as Rabbi Mandel essentially acknowledged regarding our Proclamation) than are people of "lower" status. But soon people like Rabbi Mandel may find themselves utterly isolated from the Jewish community for having waited until almost everyone else has endorsed the PLO-defunding campaign.

Many Jewish Leaders Are Helping the JAHG-USA Campaign

Once JAHG-USA received the endorsements of a couple of leaders of the official rabbinical council for the Flatbush area of Brooklyn, other directors of the Vaad began streaming forward to sign.

Rabbi Shurin gave his endorsement last October 23rd, within two weeks of the Vaad's president, Rabbi Herbert Bomzer (reviewed last week), signing. He serves as honorary vice president of the Flatbush council, which has hundreds of rabbis as members.

Rabbi Burg signed the same day as Rabbi Shurin. Not only is he the executive vice president of the council, but he also runs his own synagogue, Congregation Pri Eitz Chaim in Brooklyn.

Rabbi Greenwald endorsed about a week later, on October 31st. He is the father of Rabbi Daniel Greenwald (reviewed last week), the Flatbush council's corresponding secretary who endorsed JAHG-USA on October 20th. The elder Rabbi Greenwald is a prominent leader on the Vaad, serving as one of its three vice presidents as well as chairman of both the Political Action Committee and the Education Committee of the council. He runs his own synagogue, the Torath Israel Sephardic Congregation of Brooklyn.

For the record, none of these orthodox rabbis is Hasidic. Their influence is strongest among orthodox Jews in Brooklyn but, because of their leadership on the well-known Flatbush council, their voices are heard among many orthodox, non-Hasidic Jews nationwide (Hasidic Jews form only a minority of orthodox Jews as a whole). By signing the Proclamation, these rabbis helped accelerate the momentum that continued bringing endorsements from other council leaders in the weeks that followed.

• (In response to our May 7th issue, where we answered the false charges of the Christian Church against King David):
"…As for other evidence of [King] David's very human failings, he wished to build the temple, but G-d prevented him from doing so because of his war-like nature…" — DJ.

Our response to this letter, part 4: King David wasn't allowed to build the Jerusalem Temple, but not for this reason, nor for any sin on his part.

First of all, a person isn't judged for his nature. That's what he's born with, what's given to him by G-d. A person is judged for his actions, for whether he turns his nature to serve G-d.

David certainly did. To pick just one example, I Kings 3:6 states that King David walked before G-d "in truth and in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart." The Hebrew word for "truth" ("emess") refers to a quality that permeates through and through, without inconsistency. The Bible clearly says King David didn't use improper violence at any time.

In fact, violence is often a commandment of G-d. Included among the Biblical commandments incumbent on the Jewish people (under certain conditions) are to conquer the land of Israel and clear it of all idolatrous gentiles (such as the G-d-given order to wipe out the Canaanite nations), to attack and exterminate the entire nation of Amalek (men, women, and children), and to defend the land of Israel and the Jewish people from enemies. King David pursued all of these objectives, but was not able to finish them in his lifetime, largely because he had to spend much time and energy defending himself from numerous Jewish opponents and jealous conspirators seeking the throne.

The Temple couldn't be built until all surrounding gentiles were conquered and subdued, a necessary precondition. That job was finished by his son, King Solomon. As King Solomon states in I Kings 5:17, King David "was not able to built the House for the Name of Hashem his G-d because of the war that surrounded him, until Hashem placed them [the gentiles] under the soles of my feet." What prevented King David from building the Temple himself was the fact that he didn't wage enough war to finish the necessary victories over the gentiles.

That wasn't King David's fault, but rather the fault of his generation, which was spiritually low enough to undermine King David's efforts. By the time he handed power to his son, however, he had spiritually strengthened the Jewish people enough to make it easy for King Solomon to finish the wars, conquer the gentiles, and build the Temple. As a result of King David's mighty struggle against sin and evil, King Solomon's generation of Jews enjoyed great prosperity, peace, and G-dly influence over the world.

The Christian Church is the main author of the smears against righteous leaders favored by G-d. In their war against G-d's Law, Church leaders seek to discredit those leaders in favor of the rebellious Jesus, upon whom they simultaneously confer the titles "Messiah" (i.e., king from the tribe of Judah), "High Priest" (which can only be from the tribe of Levi), and man-god (a reflection of ancient pagan cults from India to Egypt that worshipped man-gods who, according to legend, were born from virgin mothers, were killed, and came back to life a few days later, etc.). The point behind deifying Jesus is to try to nullify G-d's Law in favor of whatever sacraments or doctrines that Church leaders wish to invent.
